johnharoldbrown@gmail.com about Future Dash on 20 Aug 2012

Hi Arno I downloaded this to play with my son on a C64 emulator but cannot figure out how to start it. When I run it, it asks me to hit Space to start, then outputs a description of the game (written using 'Cool Write' or something like that), followed by (very slowly) the Boulderdash title written in monocoloured 'characters' (well, blocks) - hitting Space again only pauses it, F1 restarts it, F3 and F5 make it run slow or fast - nothing else e.g. hitting buttons on a game controller or any of the other keys works; at the end it asks me if I want to restart and if I say yes it returns to outputting the description, and if I say no, it quits. What am I doing wrong?

You are welcome to email me as well as reply here.

Thanks a lot.
John

Dustin (Author) about Rockford's Tale on 7 Aug 2012

One day, Rockford, who has become a proud father, tells his children his story of the very beginning of his career as a treasure seeker. Well, he doesn't always tell them the precise truth... here and there he wants to raise the tension and alters one detail or another ;)

This game is the story that Rockford tells his children. It consists of modified caves of the original games BD1 and 2. For example, in the screenshot shown here you don't need only 12 diamonds as in the well-known original, but 60. How ever is this possible? ;)

I wish you enjoy the game :)

Dustin (Author) about Boulder Dash - The New Elements on 7 Aug 2012

This game is actually called "Boulder Dash- The New Elements"- I just forgot to rename the file, but you'll see the real game name on the title screen :)

In this game, I played with non-classic elements and effects. The game also features a stroy: Rockford's family was kidnapped and he must go and get them back, while a mysterious old man called "Ashmiralda" helps and leads him through seven big kingdoms.

Every kingdom consists of four caves (except the last one, which has five). The last cave of each kingdom is a fortress, in which there is a final boss which Rockford must find and beat in order to get to the next kingdom.

I hope you like the non-classic style and enjoy the game :)

As I am a fan of the original BD five-level concept and as I had many ideas for caves that fit well into this concept, I started the series "Dustin's Boulder Dash".

The aim of this game is to be very close to the original BD concept. As the original BD games, this game features 16 caves and 4 intermissions on 5 difficulty levels. The levels differ only in random seed, time limit, number of needed diamonds and speed (just as in the original games).

I think level 1 has a difficulty similar to the original games BD 1 and 2, while level 5 is quite difficult (at least I have problems to play through it without a Game Over).

I also named all the caves and ints, but the names aren't given in the game (the caves are just called A, B, C and so on as in the original games).
Here are the cave names:

A- Dream
B- One-way doors
C- Selection
D- Grid
Int1- Arrow
E- Good Mood
F- Frontier
G- Windows
H- Pirate Island
Int2- Coverage
I- Good Wall Hunting
J- Diamonds
K- Cosmonaut
L- Rock Around The Clock
Int3- Priorities
M- Pile of Debris
N- Sendy's Timers
O- Aptitude Test
P- Multiplication Palace
Int4- Cave-in

Enjoy the game :)

Dustin (Author) about Boulder Dash 02 - The Expert Levels on 6 Aug 2012

Here I made the same with BD2 that I made with BD1 in the other game. For all BD2 fans who want a new challenge! Once again, level 1 is identic to level 5 of the original BD2, while levels 2-5 are harder versions. Enjoy it :)

Dustin (Author) about Boulder Dash - The Expert Levels on 6 Aug 2012

The idea for this game came to me when I played through level 5 of the original BD1 and found that some caves could still be made harder by demanding more diamonds, giving less time or changing the random seed so that there are more tricky spots in the caves.

The caves of this game are actually the same as in BD1, BUT with different random seeds, required diamonds and time limits in order to make the caves harder. The first level of this game is identic to the fifth level of the original BD1. Levels 2-5 of this game are the harder versions, you might call it level 6-9 of the original BD1.

So this game is for players who still like the caves of BD1 and want a new challenge! Enjoy it :)

Dustin (Author) about Rockfort 01 - The Long Way on 6 Aug 2012

One word concerning the 5 levels:

Level 3 is the "main level" that the story refers to. If you play another level, it may happen that one or another cave doesn't really fit into the story (which can be read cave by cave).
Level 1 and 2 are introductory and might be too easy or even boring for pros.
Level 4 and 5 are for those who found level 3 still too easy ;) Level 5 is so hard that I would most likely fail playing through this level (without savestates xD). But of course, every cave is tested and 100% solvable!

All this is also true for Rock Fort 2 and 3!

Dustin (Author) about Rockfort 03 - Rockford's Dream on 6 Aug 2012

At the end of Rock Fort 2, our hero Rockford has found the big treasure in the fortress! But he is still caught in the mountain and it shall not be easy to get back home. And - honestly - is money really everything that makes you happy? Perhaps not...

Originally I didn't plan to make a third episode of RockFort. The story was to end with Rockford finding the treasure. But as I still had a lot of ideas for caves and I also had an idea for a story twist, I decided to create Rock Fort 3.

Once again there are 16 caves on 5 levels, the main level being 3. In addition to the intermissions, you will also see some "cut-scenes" referring to the story. The story comes to a clear and definite end in this game. Enjoy it :)

Dustin (Author) about Rockfort 02 - Inside the Fort on 6 Aug 2012

At the end of Rock Fort 1, our hero Rockford has finally found the fort which is said to hold such a big treasure! What dangers may the fort hold for Rockford before he finds that treasure?

All 16 caves and all intermissions play inside the fort. I tried to give the caves a dark atmosphere. Hope you enjoy the game :)

Dustin (Author) about Rockfort 01 - The Long Way on 6 Aug 2012

This is my first self-made BD game! Rockford has heard about a secret fortress inside a strange mountain. The fort is said to hold a big diamond treasure, and Rockford- of course- goes to search the fortress immediately! his journey starts in a desert (4 caves). Then he reaches the mountain, which he must climb up to the top (5 caves). There he finds a potion which leads him inside the mountain, where the fort is said to be! (7 caves).

The game features 16 classical BD caves on 5 levels (the main level is level 3), some intermissions and a story referring to the game. I hope you enjoy it :)

The first game of a fantastic series! This game is still quite playable also for non- "ultimate pros". I had a lot of fun playing it!

Arno about Boulder Dash 03 on 9 Jan 2011

Boulder Dash 3 from American Action is the third episode in the official BD series for the Commodore 64.

This game uses the engine from BD1 and therefore some feature (phisics, music, title screen) are the similar or identical to those of BD1. But the graphics have changed: in BD3 we enjoy a different graphics set: the Space graphics.

The caves of BD3 were not that creative i.m.o., although a few of them have nice ideas. H, for instance, is the first cave that uses 3 magic walls stacked. Another interesting fact is that both cave O and intermission 1 actually exploit a bug that was present in the BD1 engine: When a boulder falls into a magic wall, the cavescan restarts, which has as side effect that amoeba below the magic wall turns into diamonds immediately.

Arno about Boulder Dash 02 - Rockford's Revenge on 9 Jan 2011

The second episode in the BD history, and another masterpiece from Peter Liepa!

In this game two elements were new: the slime (cave E, M) and growing wall (cave O). Also the music and the title screen has changed w.r.t. the first BD episode.

I found the caves of BD2 a bit harder than those of BD1, especially L, O and P.

Arno about Boulder Dash on 9 Jan 2011

The game it all started with.... To me this is best computer game ever created!!!

I have played all these cave uncountably many times, and I know them all by heart! This game has been the main source of inspiration for me (and many others as well) to design my own levels, and creating BD related tools and websites.

Visit my site for a full review of all the individual caves and intermissions.
